Ice shedding from wind turbines
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2024)Wind power is an excellent source of renewable energy in areas with sufficient wind resources. Usually, the best locations for wind turbines are on the tops of hills and ridges, where there are lower temperatures [1]. Cold temperatures are responsible for novel challenges [2, 3]. Due to cold climatic conditions, turbine blades are subjected to icing [4]. A number of methods have been proposed and ... -
Multiphysics modeling of wind turbines
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2024)According toThe International SocietyofMultiphysics (“Definition— MULTIPHYSICS”),multiphysics (sometimes spelledasmulti-physics) is defined as a coupled modeling approach of studies that demands simultaneous addressing of hitherto separate physical disciplines and combining them to generate relational mathematical models and validate them with controlled experiments to enhance the understanding of ... -
Home Load Disaggregation using Deep Learning and Bayesian Optimization: A Case Study in Arctic Climate in Northern Norway
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2023-08-03)Load monitoring is an essential task in energy management systems. In this paper, an approach that relies on a long short-term memory (LSTM) model and a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) filter is presented to estimate the energy usage of flexible appliances. In the preprocessing stage, the main features of the aggregated power signal are extracted using DWT. Deep learning methods are very sensitive ... -
Classification of bulk cargo types stored openly at ports using CNN
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2023-10-20)In this paper, we present a novel concept of tracking cargoes at open ports using remote sensing images and convolution neural network (CNN) to classify various dry bulk commodities. The dataset used is prepared using Sentinel-2 atmospherically corrected (Sentinel-2 L2A) images covering 12 spectral bands. There are total 4995 labeled and geo-referenced images for four different cargoes-bauxite, coal, ... -

Today, with the increasing competition due to globalization of markets and mass customization, as well as the increasing focus on green shift and sustainability, the need to take advantage of new technological innovations has never been more prominent. Metal Additive Manufacturing (MAM) is one ... -
Customizing Smart Warehouse Management for Large Scale Production Industries
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2023-05-23)Rapid changes in the level of digitalization have changed manufacturing and production industries during our lifetime. Several industries have explored the extent to which these changes can be utilized to optimize supply chain processes and increase sustainability – they have achieved success in implementation. The energy industry, being one of the world’s largest and most financially consuming ... -
Digital Controller Design and Implementation for AC and DC Side of 3ph qZSI
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-09-28)This article presents the multi-loop digital controller design of a quasi-z-source inverter (qZSI). The qZSI is a single-stage power converter and can operate in buck and boost modes. The qZSI is an economical solution for distributed generation and eliminates the need for two-stage power conversion. This article proposes a detailed step-wise digital controller design using a multi-loop control ... -
pH-dependent endocytosis mechanisms for influenza A and SARS-coronavirus
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-05-10)The ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the influenza epidemics have revived the interest in understanding how these highly contagious enveloped viruses respond to alterations in the physicochemical properties of their microenvironment. By understanding the mechanisms and conditions by which viruses exploit the pH environment of the host cell during endocytosis, we can gain a better understanding ... -
Irregular luggage classification experiments using data from Tromsø airport
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2023-09-22)This paper examines the current state-of-the-art in object tracking and detection in the context of baggage handling systems using a variety of technologies, with special interest in image classification. Data collection at Tromsø Airport using simple and inexpensive equipment in order to capture images of different types of luggage will be described. Furthermore, a selection of three relevant ... -
Towards automatic generation of image recognition models for industrial robot arms
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-10-12)As the world moves towards mass customization, there is a need for a manufacturing system that can quickly adapt to market changes. Reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS) have been proposed as a solution. RMS is designed to be modular with a high degree of flexibility. However, such a structure creates a lot of complexity. For instance, if the modules are moved or changed, the robot arms in the ... -
Predicting Peak Prices in the Current Day-Ahead Market
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2023-06)The work presented has studied price developments in the day-ahead market. The statistical properties inherent in the time series constituting the day-to-day prices have been investigated. It is shown that these properties are radically different in 2022 than former years and resemble more chance like properties for which make predicting future peak prices especially hard. To overcome this, a space ... -
Using Light Weight Electric Vehicles for V2G services in the Arctic
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2023-06)The proposed paper documents research carried out in the Smart Charge project. This project has investigated the use of electric snowmobiles for V2G purposes. Electric snowmobiles and ATVs have been introduced in remote areas in the Arctic to replace the fossil fuelled vehicles that dominate today. Electric versions of these can add extra loads to the local electricity grid. But they can also be ... -
Evaluating of melting-ice process in a vertical pipe with consideration of net sensible heat
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-04-19)In ice-melting process, motion of liquid–solid interface is complicated due to moving boundary, which is also called Stefan interface problem. Although the Stefan model has been widely utilized, it frequently overestimates the melting rate. In the present study, the net-sensible-heat of the phases are taken into account as an additional physical effect to the Stefan model for one-phase case and ... -
Wavelet neural networks versus wavelet-based naural networks
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023)This is the first paper in a sequence of studies including also [#!llhm2022!#] and [#!llhm2022_1!#] in which we introduce a new type of neural networks (NNs) – wavelet-based neural networks (WBNNs) – and study their properties and potential for applications. We begin this study with a comparison to the currently existing type of wavelet neural networks (WNNs) and show that WBNNs vastly outperform ... -

As one of the world’s largest industries with a long-lasting and significant influence on global prosperity, national economy, food safety, and public health, the importance of sustainability of the aquaculture industry cannot be underestimated. One of the challenges ... -
Properties of sequence of linear functionals on BV with applications
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-11-24)This paper is devoted to investigating the sequence of some linear functionals in the space BV of finite variation functions. We prove that under certain conditions this sequence is bounded. We also prove that this result is sharp. In particular, the obtained results can be used to study convergence of some general Fourier series. Moreover, the obtained conditions seem to be new and useful also for ... -
Sharpness of some Hardy-type inequalities
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-12-04)The current status concerning Hardy-type inequalities with sharp constants is presented and described in a unified convexity way. In particular, it is then natural to replace the Lebesgue measure dx with the Haar measure . There are also derived some new two-sided Hardy-type inequalities for monotone functions, where not only the two constants are sharp but also the involved function spaces are ... -
