Investigating Ice Nucleation and Heat Transfer Dynamics in Supercooled Liquid Water Using Thermography
(Conference object; Konferansebidrag, 2023-12)This study delves into the intricate interplay of thermography, ice nucleation, and heat transfer during the phase change from supercooled liquid water to crystallized ice. The phenomena of ice nucleation and its subsequent growth have paramount importance in various fields, including cold climate engineering, atmospheric science, cryopreservation, and refrigeration systems. Our research aims to ... -
A CFD Study of Preventing Snow Accumulations on Roofs using Airflows
(Conference object; Konferansebidrag, 2023-12)Today, there is an abundance of roof designs for buildings, each possessing distinct characteristics when subjected to snowy and cold conditions. Snow buildup on roofs poses various risks, including structural damage and personal injuries. Snow loads can lead to severe building damage or even collapse. The presence of intricate roof shapes and valleys exacerbates the potential harm caused by snow. ... -
Analysis of parameters influencing pathogen concentration in a room with displacement ventilation using computational fluid dynamics and Taguchi methods
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-10-30)Analyzing multiple physical factors simultaneously to determine optimal ventilation solutions can be challenging. Furthermore, this type of analysis needs a large case number to be investigated, making the problem’s solution unfeasible. This study tackled these challenges by integrating Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with the Taguchi method to overcome these issues. Our previous research ... -
A two-component nonlinear variational wave system
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-11-14)We derive a novel two-component generalization of the nonlinear variational wave equation as a model for the director field of a nematic liquid crystal with a variable order parameter. The equation admits classical solutions locally in time. We prove that a special semilinear case is globally well-posed. We show that a particular long time asymptotic expansion around a constant state in a moving ... -
Electrical stunning and killing of Atlantic salmon
(Research report; Forskningsrapport, 2023)Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) at various size 226-1938 g were placed in electric dry stunning either tailor head- first and then exposed to 50 Hz, 240 V AC for 0.5 and thereafter 9.5 s of electricity. This to verify whether the animal is rendered unconscious prior to killing by immersing the animal into cold brine (-14 to -18 °C) or hypoxic water, supersaturated with CO2. In addition, salmon from ... -

Post-COVID ventilation design: Infection risk-based target ventilation rates and point source ventilation effectiveness
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-07-19)Ventilation, air filtration and disinfection have been found to be the main engineering measures to control the airborne respiratory infection transmission in shared indoor spaces. Wells-Riley model modifications allow to calculate the infection risk probability, but gaps in viral load data, risk control methods and dealing with incomplete mixing have resulted in ventilation recommendations falling ... -
Multi-objective optimization of energy-efficient retrofitting strategies for single-family residential homes: Minimizing energy consumption, CO2 emissions and retrofit costs
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-09-08)The retrofitting of buildings for improved energy efficiency has been recognized as crucial for achieving climate mitigation goals in Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H). However, performing multi-objective optimizations for retrofitting existing buildings poses challenges, as it requires balancing conflicting objectives such as retrofit costs, energy savings, and CO2 reduction. To tackle ... -
Comparing optimization schemes for solving case studies with multiple heat exchangers using high-order pinch point temperature difference methods
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-10-21)Heat exchangers (HEs) are often modeled using pinch point temperature difference (ΔTpinch) methods when optimizing systems with HEs. However, even small inaccuracies in model predictions of HEs will introduce numerical noise that can cause optimization algorithms to fail. A recent study of single HEs suggests that highorder interpolation methods can compute ΔTpinch much faster ... -

Statistical Prediction of Rate Constants for the Pyrolysis of High-Density Plastic Waste
(Conference object; Konferansebidrag, 2022)The 400 million tons of waste plastic are disposed of around the world. A study reported by SINTEF estimates that the Norwegian fishing fleet dumps around 380 tons of plastic material in the ocean each year. This waste is increasing at an alarming rate, threatening aquatic life, polluting the environment, and causing serious diseases. Since this waste includes hydrocarbons and is a massive source ... -

Comparing RANS with LES - AMR Study in Indoor Bio-aerosol Transmission
(Conference object; Konferansebidrag, 2022)The study presents the multiphysics modeling of bio-aerosols generated from human respiratory impulses such as coughing, sneezing, breathing, and talking. These droplet-packed viruses exploit the influence of airflow for effortless transmission, rendering them a potential health risk to individuals in the same indoor environment. To gain insight into the transmission of these airborne particles, ...
