Using power system modelling outputs to identify weather-induced extreme events in highly renewable systems
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2024-04-26)In highly renewable power systems the increased weather dependence can result in new resilience challenges, such as renewable energy droughts, or a lack of sufficient renewable generation at times of high demand. The weather conditions responsible for these challenges have been well-studied in the literature. However, in reality multi-day resilience challenges are triggered by complex interactions ... -
Visible light-mediated alkyl radical additions to alkenyl and alkynyl silanes
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 2024-11-15)<p>Radicals are reactive species that possess a unique reactivity, which enables them to form unusual bonds unreachable by ionic chemistry. In the last twenty years, radical chemistry has benefited from a renewed interest due to the emergence of methods that can initiate radical reactions under mild conditions. Among those, visible light-mediated radical chemistry has become established as a powerful ... -
Motivation for slushflow classification
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024)Slushflows are a type of rapid mass movement where water saturated snow flows downhill. Slushflows come in many different sizes, have different triggering mechanisms, and contain debris ranging from simply snow and ice to soil, rock and vegetation. Slushflows are often misclassified as debris flows, wet snow avalanches or river/stream ice jam processes. <p> <p>Norway reports 5 to 20 larger ... -
Limitations of RAMMS:Debrisflow as a slushflow simulation tool
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024)Slushflows are defined as water-saturated snow (slush), that moves rapidly downslope as a gravitational mass flow. The high-water content of the flow results in a high density, posing a significant danger to construction, infrastructure and people in its path. To reduce this danger, it is important to predict where slushflows may initiate and travel in the terrain. Numerical modelling of the runout ... -

Lie Admissible Triple Algebras: The Connection Algebra of Symmetric Spaces
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-07-25)Associated to a symmetric space there is a canonical connection with zero torsion and parallel curvature. This connection acts as a binary operator on the vector space of smooth sections of the tangent bundle, and it is linear with respect to the real numbers. Thus the smooth section of the tangent bundle together with the connection form an algebra we call the connection algebra. The constraints ... -
On nonnegative invariant quartics in type A
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-10-09)The equivariant nonnegativity versus sums of squares question has been solved for any infinite series of essential reflection groups but type <i>A</i>. As a first step to a classification, we analyse <i>An</i> -invariant quartics. We prove that the cones of invariant sums of squares and nonnegative forms are equal if and only if the number of variables is at most 3 or odd. -

Turbulence Around Auroral Arcs
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-08-18)The spectacular visual displays from the aurora come from curtains of excited atoms and molecules, impacted by energetic charged particles. These particles are accelerated from great distances in Earth's magnetotail, causing them to precipitate into the ionosphere. Energetic particle precipitation is associated with currents that generate electric fields, and the end result is a dissipation of the ... -
Turbulence Embedded Into the Ionosphere by Electromagnetic Waves
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-08-19)When charged particles are accelerated from Earth's magnetosphere and precipitate into the atmosphere, their impact with neutral gas creates the aurora. Structured electric fields drive the acceleration processes but they are also passed down to the ionosphere, meaning that turbulence can in part be embedded into the ionosphere rather than emerge through instability processes locally. Applying a ... -
Propagating Transparency: A Deep Dive into the Interpretability of Neural Networks
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-08-19)In the rapidly evolving landscape of deep learning (DL), understanding the inner workings of neural networks remains a significant challenge. The need for transparency and accountability in DL models grows in importance as they become more prevalent in decision-making processes. Interpreting these models is key to addressing this challenge. This paper offers a comprehensive overview of interpretable ... -
The Universal Equivariance Properties of Exotic Aromatic B-Series
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-08-16)The exotic aromatic Butcher series were originally introduced for the calculation of order conditions for the high order numerical integration of ergodic stochastic differential equations in Rd and on manifolds. We prove in this paper that exotic aromatic B-series satisfy a universal geometric property, namely that they are characterised by locality and equivariance with respect to orthogonal ... -
Removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water using magnetic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-modified pine bark
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-09-02)Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have gained global attention in recent years due to their adverse effect on environment and human health. In this study, a novel and cost-effective sorbent was developed utilizing forestry by-product pine bark and tested for the removal of PFAS compounds from both synthetic solutions and contaminated groundwater. The synthesis of the adsorbent included two ... -
A conservative stochastic Dirac-Klein-Gordon system
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-07-04)Considered herein is a particular nonlinear dispersive stochastic system consisting of Dirac and Klein-Gordon equations. They are coupled by nonlinear terms due to the Yukawa interaction. We consider a case of homogeneous multiplicative noise that seems to be very natural from the perspective of the least action formalism. We are able to show existence and uniqueness of a corresponding Cauchy problem ... -
Incipient fault detection and isolation with Cauchy–Schwarz divergence: A probabilistic approach
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-08-02)To monitor the dynamics and non-stationarity inherent in industrial processes, we propose a novel incipient fault detection and isolation scheme grounded in a probabilistic perspective, using the Cauchy–Schwarz (CS) divergence. Our innovation lies in the utilization of marginal CS divergence for incipient fault detection and the conditional CS divergence for fault isolation. This approach neither ... -
