(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017)Much recent theorizing in philosophy of history has revolved around the idea of enduring, persistent pasts as opposed to the proto-modern sense of time which presupposes a neat break between the absent past and the present. This article draws on examples from memory studies, archaeology, art history, law and theory of history to explain the idea of the persistence of the past, and to suggest ... -

Piratverksemd i nord - nokre døme frå Finnmark tidleg på 1600-talet
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016)Pirates are best known for their impact in southern seas, such as the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas around the time known as the Golden Age of Piracy from 1690–1730. This article focuses on an area further north, where the history of piracy is less known. In the 1600s, Northern Norway and the northern trading routes to Russia were frequently (or sometimes not) exposed to the threats of pirates ... -

Lappmarkens kristendom og de førstefødtes menighet
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016)Early Læstadianism had a strong missionary profile. Within a couple of decades after its beginning in 1845, the movement had established numerous congregations not only in northern Sweden, Finland and Norway, but also in North America. Internal tensions, however, caused a split in which the movement separated into an Eastern and a Western branch. The mission work of the Western branch was based ... -

(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-02-18)Seal hunting and whaling have played an important part of people’s livelihoods throughout prehistory as evidenced by rock carvings, remains of bones, artifacts from aquatic animals and hunting tools. This paper focuses on one of 2 the more elusive resources relating to such activities: marine mammal blubber. Although marine blubber easily decomposes, the organic material has been documented from ... -
